Marine wifi Antenna Sighting Distance Calculator at Sea
We have created this convenient marine wifi antenna sighting distance calculator at sea that will work in Metric or Imperial measurements. It calculates the maximum distance that will be available in a point to point Wifi link from a boat antenna to an onshore antenna. Enter the height above Sea Level either in metres or feet for each antenna. Press either of the Compute buttons and the effective distance between the antennas will be displayed in both kilometers and miles. Setting one of the antenna heights to “0” gives you the effective distance from the other antenna position to the horizon it sees.

Fresnel Radius Value
The Fresnel radius shown is the extra antenna height needed at both antennas if there was no signal loss due to the fresnel effect. Full power transfer is impractical at normal distances as can be seen by the extra antenna heights needed. We therefore assume only half of the Fresnel envelope is visible, so that you should expect a 6dB power loss for this line of sight calculation. Note: This calculator does not compensates for signal loss due to the Fresnel effect. Setting one of the antenna heights to “0” gives you the effective distance from the other antenna position to the horizon.
